726 Area Code – San Antonio, Texas: Location, Time Zone & History

Dial 726 and you're using an area code chosen on purpose: the digits spell "SAN" on a phone keypad, a nod to San Antonio, the city it overlays. The Public Utility Commission of Texas ordered the new code after NANPA projected that area code 210 would run out of numbers by mid-2018. 726 was announced in August 2016 and entered service October 23, 2017 as an all-services overlay of 210, with mandatory ten-digit dialing arriving alongside it.

210 itself split from 512 in November 1992, but explosive growth from cellular and pager demand exhausted it within just four years, forcing a three-way split on July 7, 1997: Bexar County kept 210, the surrounding Hill Country suburbs became 830, and the Rio Grande Valley became 956. That history leaves the 210/726 complex as an enclave completely surrounded by 830, similar to Chicago's 312 or Pittsburgh's 412/878.
