737 Area Code – Austin, Texas: Location, Time Zone & History

Area code 737 is Austin's overlay code, laid over the same territory as the older area code 512. That older code traces back to October 1947, when it covered most of south-central Texas before being reduced by two later splits: area code 210 took the western and southwestern territory, including San Antonio and the Rio Grande Valley, in 1992, and area code 361 took the southern portion, including Corpus Christi, effective February 13, 1999.

With 512's remaining Austin-area footprint still growing, 737 was introduced as an all-services overlay covering the identical territory, entering service on July 1, 2013 after ten-digit dialing was phased in from December 2012 and made mandatory by June 1, 2013.

The shared 512/737 numbering plan area reaches Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Georgetown, San Marcos, and Kyle, and is closely tied to the region's identity as the "Silicon Hills" -- a hub for information technology, semiconductors, higher education, and state government -- as well as its reputation as the "Live Music Capital of the World."
