Area code 202 has served the entire District of Columbia since 1947, one of the original North American area codes, and it never once underwent a geographic split. When the D.C. Public Service Commission projected in 2020 that 202's supply of central office codes would run out by 2022, NANPA responded not with a split but with an overlay: 771, which entered service on November 9, 2021.
The rollout followed the now-familiar overlay sequence -- permissive ten-digit dialing began April 10, 2021, mandatory ten-digit dialing followed on October 9, and the first 771 central office codes, 777 and 888, were assigned on November 8 and 9 to put the new code into service. Because 771 overlays rather than splits the District, every existing 202 number stayed exactly as it was; only the dialing pattern changed.
Covering Washington, Georgetown, Capitol Hill, and Anacostia, the shared 202/771 numbering plan area serves roughly 689,545 people per the 2020 Census and remains defined by federal government work, tourism, higher education, research, and news media.
