History & Cultural Notes
Santa Barbara and its celebrity-favored neighbor Montecito share their phone numbers with area code 820, an overlay introduced in 2018 that let long-established subscribers on area code 805 keep their existing numbers while new lines in the same coastal counties took the new code. The California Public Utilities Commission approved 820 on May 25, 2017, after holding hearings in August 2016 on 805's projected number exhaustion, and it entered service in June 2018 alongside mandatory ten-digit local dialing.
805 itself had already been trimmed once before, in 1999, when area code 661 split off the eastern portion -- Kern County, the Santa Clarita Valley, and the Antelope Valley -- leaving the coastal footprint that 820 now overlays: San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties, plus a slice of southern Monterey County, home to roughly 1.57 million people per the 2020 Census.
The shared 805/820 territory is wine and agricultural country -- Santa Barbara County's Santa Ynez Valley vineyards, Ventura County strawberries and citrus -- alongside Vandenberg Space Force Base near Lompoc, a major U.S. site for polar-orbit satellite and rocket launches, and Amgen's biotechnology headquarters in Thousand Oaks. UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo round out the region's research presence.
