848 Area Code – Edison, New Jersey: Location, Time Zone & History

848 is an all-services overlay laid directly on top of area code 732, sharing the same Middlesex, Monmouth, Somerset, Union, and northern Ocean county footprint along the New Jersey Shore corridor. 732 itself had split from the southeastern portion of area code 908 back in 1997. As that pool exhausted rapidly, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities approved 848 in early 2001; mandatory ten-digit dialing began December 1, 2001, and 848 entered service December 29, 2001 as New Jersey's very first overlay area code.

The shared 732/848 territory blends Jersey Shore tourism -- Asbury Park, Long Branch, Point Pleasant -- with heavyweight corporate and academic anchors: Johnson & Johnson's world headquarters has stood in New Brunswick since 1983, and Rutgers University's largest campus sits in the same city. The New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway both run through the Middlesex County core of the region.
