854 Area Code – Charleston, South Carolina: Location, Time Zone & History

South Carolina's Lowcountry and Grand Strand once shared a single numbering plan area, but rapid growth drove it toward exhaustion. Announced in December 2013, area code 854 entered service March 14, 2015 as the state's first all-services overlay, layered on top of existing area code 843 rather than splitting its territory geographically.

The shared 843/854 footprint stretches across fourteen coastal counties, from historic Charleston through the resort corridor of Myrtle Beach to the Marine Corps training grounds of Parris Island, which has trained recruits since 1915. Economically the region rests on several pillars:
