History & Cultural Notes

Southeastern North Carolina's area code 910 entered service November 14, 1993, splitting off from area code 919 and originally spanning the Piedmont Triad, the Sandhills, and the coastal southeast. That broad footprint didn't last: in 1997 the northwestern Piedmont Triad portion was carved out as area code 336, narrowing 910 to the Sandhills and coastal region it serves today, anchored by Fayetteville and Wilmington.

As demand kept climbing, North Carolina added its second overlay, area code 472, across the same 910 territory effective October 7, 2022 -- following 743's overlay on 336 -- bringing mandatory ten-digit dialing to the region.

Fayetteville is home to Fort Bragg, the U.S. Army's largest installation by population, which was renamed Fort Liberty in 2023 before reverting to Fort Bragg in February 2025 in honor of WWII paratrooper Roland L. Bragg.
