History & Cultural Notes
North Carolina's original 1947 area code, 704, once covered the whole state, but by 1954 the eastern two-thirds had grown enough to split off as 919. Two more splits followed as the region kept growing: 910 broke away in 1993 to take the Piedmont Triad, Sandhills, and southeastern coast, and 252 split off in 1998 with the northeastern Coastal Plain and Outer Banks. What remained was the Research Triangle footprint of today -- Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, and Cary.
Continued growth pushed 919 to add an overlay, 984, which entered service on April 30, 2012 after a permissive-dialing period and brought mandatory ten-digit dialing to the Triangle. The area is anchored economically by Research Triangle Park, one of the largest research parks in the country, home to firms like IBM, Cisco, and SAS Institute, alongside Duke University, UNC-Chapel Hill, and NC State University. Raleigh, the state capital, also hosts the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes.
