History & Cultural Notes

Boston's area code 617 traces back to 1947, one of the original 86 numbering plan areas assigned across North America, then covering all of eastern Massachusetts from Worcester County to Cape Cod. Splits carved off 508 in 1988 and 781 in 1997, but by the turn of the century 617 was again nearing exhaustion. Rather than split further, planners introduced 857 as an all-services overlay, activated May 2, 2001, with mandatory ten-digit local dialing required from that same date so the two codes could coexist.

The shared 617/857 territory covers Boston and its inner suburbs -- Cambridge, Brookline, Newton, Quincy, Somerville, and more -- across parts of Suffolk, Middlesex, Norfolk, and Essex counties. It is anchored by Harvard University and MIT in Cambridge, the Longwood Medical Area's hospitals and biotech research institutions, and a deep base of financial services and technology startups.

Few numbering plan areas carry as much American history. The Freedom Trail links sixteen Revolutionary War sites, earning Boston the nickname "the Cradle of Liberty," Fenway Park has hosted the Red Sox since 1912 as the oldest ballpark still in use in Major League Baseball, and the Tremont Street Subway, opened in 1897, was the first subway built in the United States.
