858 entered service June 12, 1999 as the first phase of a planned three-way split of area code 619, taking northwestern San Diego County -- La Jolla, University City, Poway, Rancho Bernardo, and the I-15/I-805 corridor -- while 619 kept the city center and the southern and eastern county. A second phase, a proposed new area code 935, was cancelled in 2000 after number pooling stretched the existing supply further than expected.
The two codes drew even closer in 2018, when the geographic boundary between 619 and 858 was eliminated entirely. Ten-digit local dialing became mandatory May 19, 2018, and starting that June new numbers could be issued from either code anywhere in the combined territory, turning what began as a split into a single overlay complex spanning the whole of San Diego.
The 858 footprint is a research and technology powerhouse: the Torrey Pines Mesa cluster of the Salk Institute and Scripps Research sits alongside the University of California San Diego, and Qualcomm is headquartered in the Sorrento Valley/University City corridor. La Jolla adds a coastal identity of its own, known for La Jolla Cove and an upscale arts and shopping district drawing visitors to its bluffs.
