Chicago's third area code, 872, is an all-services distributed overlay that went live November 7, 2009, layered directly over the combined territory of downtown-Loop code 312 and outer-neighborhood code 773 rather than carving out new geography of its own. The Illinois Commerce Commission approved the overlay after NANPA forecast that the 312/773 complex would run out of numbers, announcing the plan on August 10, 2009 ahead of activation.

Because 872 shares its footprint entirely with 312 and 773, any Chicago address can now carry a number from any of the three codes, and local calls require eleven-digit dialing (ten digits from a cell phone). The result is one of the largest local calling areas in the United States, with minimal long-distance charges across the metro region.

The shared 312/773/872 complex ties directly into Chicago's core economy: the Loop's finance and professional-services sector overlaps with 312, while healthcare and higher education, including the University of Chicago, are more closely associated with 773's residential and neighborhood reach. 872 itself represents Chicago's first all-services overlay, a milestone in how the city's numbering plan grew alongside its population.
