907 is Alaska's only area code, placed into service January 1, 1957 for the entire territory -- soon to become a state -- made possible by the December 1956 opening of the first submarine telephone cable connecting Alaska to the contiguous network via Port Angeles, Washington. In nearly seven decades it has never been split or overlaid, making it one of only a handful of statewide single-NPA codes still in use in the United States.

Anchorage, home to roughly 40% of the state's population, is both the primary and largest city and anchors the region's commercial and transportation activity. The state's economy runs on oil and gas from the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System and North Slope production, commercial fishing across the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska, tourism built around Denali National Park and the Northern Lights, and a substantial military presence at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.
