867 Area Code – Whitehorse, Yuko: Location, Time Zone & History

Whitehorse is the largest city under area code 867, which entered service October 21, 1997 by uniting the entirety of Canada's northern territories under one number. The new code combined the Yukon and Northwest Territories portions previously carried by area code 403 with the eastern-Arctic Northwest Territories portion previously carried by 819, leaving 403 to Alberta alone and 819 to western Quebec. When Nunavut split off from the Northwest Territories as its own territory in 1999, no numbering change followed -- Nunavut simply kept using 867.

By land area, 867 is the largest area code in the North American Numbering Plan, spanning roughly 3.9 million square kilometers across Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut, and touching four time zones even though Yukon itself has kept Mountain Time year-round since 2020. Whitehorse traces its growth back to the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush and remains the largest city across all three territories, while mining, tourism, and territorial government administration drive the wider economy. Despite Nunavut's creation, 867 has never been split or overlaid since 1997.
