History & Cultural Notes
Edmonton, the capital of Alberta and seat of its legislature, answers to area code 780, created on January 25, 1999 when regulators split the province's original 403 code along a line north of Red Deer. The northern two-thirds of Alberta, including Edmonton itself, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie and Lloydminster, took the new 780 code while 403 stayed south with Calgary; permissive dialing of the old code continued province-wide until that May.
780 turned out to be the last Canadian area code created by a geographic split rather than an overlay. Alberta's later growth was absorbed instead by stacking overlays on the same territory: 587 arrived September 19, 2008, 825 followed April 9, 2016, and 368 went live April 23, 2022, each layered across the combined footprint of 403 and 780 rather than carving out new geography.
