History & Cultural Notes
Few area codes have been carved up as many times as 403, Calgary's code and one of the original 86 assigned across North America in 1947. It began by covering all of Alberta and, for a period, telephone service in the Yukon and Northwest Territories as well. That territory shrank in stages: the Yukon and Northwest Territories portions split off as area code 867 in 1997, and just two years later, in 1999, a boundary drawn north of Red Deer sent Edmonton and the northern part of the province to the new area code 780, leaving 403 with only southern Alberta.
Even a smaller territory eventually needed more numbers. Alberta moved to province-wide overlays rather than further splits — area code 587 arrived in 2008 alongside mandatory ten-digit local dialing, followed by 825 in 2016 and 368 in 2022, all sharing the same numbering plan area as 403.
Southern Alberta's economy, served today by Calgary, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Red Deer, Airdrie, and Okotoks, is built on:
- Oil and gas
- Agriculture
