983 is the youngest of Denver's three area codes, activated June 17, 2022 after approval from the Colorado Public Utilities Commission in May 2021. It layers a second all-services overlay onto the 303/720 territory covering Denver, Boulder, Aurora, Lakewood, Littleton, Longmont, Broomfield, and Castle Rock along Colorado's Front Range.
The complex traces back to 303, assigned in 1947 as one of the original North American area codes. Southeastern Colorado split off to 719 in 1988, and northeastern and western Colorado -- Fort Collins, Grand Junction, Vail, Aspen -- split off to 970 in 1995. What remained of 303's Denver-Boulder core then absorbed its first overlay, 720, in 1998, and its second, 983, in 2022, together forming a three-code complex serving an estimated 3.5 million people. Because all three codes cover identical territory, callers throughout the Denver-Boulder metro have dialed 303, 720, and 983 numbers interchangeably since mandatory ten-digit dialing began with the 720 overlay in 1998.
