329 Area Code – Poughkeepsie, New York: Location, Time Zone & History

Twenty-three years passed between the creation of area code 845 and the arrival of its overlay, 329, and in that span the mid- and lower Hudson Valley grew enough to need the extra numbering capacity. Area code 845 itself was split from 914 on June 5, 2000, taking in Orange, Putnam, Rockland, and Ulster counties in full, along with parts of Columbia, Delaware, Dutchess, Greene, and Sullivan counties. As those numbers neared exhaustion, regulators authorized 329 on May 11, 2022, an all-services overlay that entered service on March 24, 2023. Mandatory ten-digit local dialing had already begun on October 24, 2021, a change also tied to the nationwide rollout of 988 as the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline code.

By the time of the 2020 census, the counties covered by the combined 845/329 plan held roughly 2.5 million residents, spread across cities including Poughkeepsie, Newburgh, Kingston, Middletown, New City, and Port Jervis. The regional economy reflects that mix of small cities and rural counties: IBM's long-standing presence in Poughkeepsie anchors a technology sector alongside healthcare, higher education, agriculture, and tourism drawn by the Catskills.

The area also carries an outsized cultural footprint: the original 1969 Woodstock festival took place at Max Yasgur's farm in Bethel, Sullivan County, within the same numbering plan area now served by 845 and 329.
