History & Cultural Notes

Western Massachusetts has carried area code 413 since 1947, when it was one of the original 86 area codes established across North America, splitting the state between 413 in the west and 617 covering Boston and the east from the very beginning. Unlike many long-lived codes, 413 has never been split or overlaid: regulators petitioned for a distributed overlay around 2000 after projecting central-office-code exhaustion by early 2002, but it was never implemented, and the region still dials on a single code today.

The territory covers Springfield, Northampton, Pittsfield, Greenfield, Great Barrington, and North Adams, with roughly 828,000 residents spread across Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden, and Hampshire counties as of the 2020 Census. Springfield is best known as the birthplace of basketball and home to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, while the Berkshires in the western half of the region have long drawn visitors for Tanglewood and its summer arts festivals. Higher education, healthcare, insurance, manufacturing, and tourism anchor the local economy.
