History & Cultural Notes

Few area codes can claim what 603 has managed since October 1947: covering an entire U.S. state without ever undergoing a split or an overlay. Assigned as one of the original 86 North American area codes at the plan's inception, 603 has remained New Hampshire's only area code for its whole existence, a rarity that has made the number a shorthand for state identity itself.

That single-code status has occasionally looked precarious. A second area code for New Hampshire was projected as early as 2013, but number pooling and reclamation policies pushed the exhaustion estimate out to at least 2032, preserving 603 as the state's sole code. The one real change to dialing came in October 2021, when mandatory ten-digit local dialing took effect statewide to accommodate the new 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline number, which conflicted with an existing central office code.

Manchester anchors the numbering area as its largest city, with Nashua, Concord, Portsmouth, and Dover among the other communities served. The region's economy spans healthcare, information technology, tourism and hospitality, manufacturing, and education, reflecting a state whose telephone history has stayed remarkably stable even as its economy has diversified.
