802 Area Code – Burlington, Vermont: Location, Time Zone & History

Area code 802 has covered the entirety of Vermont since October 1947, when it was assigned as one of the original 86 area codes in the North American Numbering Plan. In the nearly eight decades since, it has never been split and never gained an overlay -- Vermont is one of just eleven U.S. states with a single area code, and 802 functions almost as a statewide brand rather than a mere dialing prefix.

The only real change came in 2021, when mandatory ten-digit local dialing took effect by October 24 to make room for the new 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline number, which conflicted with an existing central office code. Otherwise the numbering plan is remarkably stable: exhaustion isn't projected until 2072, one of the longest runways of any single-code state in the country.

Vermont's economy leans on tourism -- Killington, Sugarbush, and Stowe draw skiers, and Ben & Jerry's Waterbury factory tour, born from a renovated Burlington gas station in 1978, is the state's biggest attraction -- alongside dairy farming and maple syrup production, where Vermont leads the entire country.
