History & Cultural Notes

New Haven-style apizza traces its American origins to Wooster Street, where Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana opened in 1925 — a landmark of the region layered by area code 475 onto the older 203 numbering plan area covering Fairfield, New Haven, and part of Litchfield counties. First proposed by Connecticut regulators in August 1999, the overlay was finally put into service on December 12, 2009, without altering 203's existing boundaries.

Connecticut's modern numbering map traces to 1995, when the state split into two zones: 203 was retained for the southwest, and a new area code 860 was created for the rest of the state. That division set the exact territory the newer code would later overlay. Mandatory 10-digit dialing was rolled out statewide that November, ahead of the 2009 launch, and the first numbers issued under it began with 882-4xxx in the Huntington section of Shelton.

Beyond Bridgeport and New Haven, the region serves Stamford, Norwalk, Waterbury, and Danbury. Stamford has grown into a hub for hedge funds and asset management, drawing on its proximity to New York City, while the wider economy spans:

  • Financial services and hedge funds
  • Higher education and biotechnology research
  • Manufacturing and healthcare
  • Tourism along the Long Island Sound coast
