484 Area Code – Allentown, Pennsylvania: Location, Time Zone & History

Area code 484 did not arise from a territorial split but as an overlay, entering service on June 5, 1999 across the entire 610 numbering plan area of eastern and southeastern Pennsylvania. That 610 territory had itself been carved out of 215 in 1994, covering Philadelphia's western suburbs, most of Berks County, and the Lehigh Valley. By the late 1990s, growth in cell phones and pagers had exhausted 610's five-year supply, so 484 was introduced together with mandatory ten-digit local dialing rather than redrawing any boundaries.

The overlay story did not end there. Pennsylvania regulators reserved a third code, 835, as early as 2000, withdrew the plan in 2005 once number-pooling conservation stretched 610/484's supply, and then reinstated it in 2021 as exhaustion returned — 835 finally went live on September 2, 2022, completing a three-way 610/484/835 overlay still in use today.

Rather than a Philadelphia identity, the region is anchored to the Lehigh Valley cities of Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton, with Reading, West Chester, and Norristown also served. Its economy leans on healthcare networks, pharmaceutical and medical-device manufacturing, and logistics — the area has become a major e-commerce warehousing hub and, more recently, a site of large-scale pharmaceutical investment.
