506 Area Code – Moncton, New Brunswick: Location, Time Zone & History

Few area codes in North America have been redrawn as many times as 506. It first appeared in 1955, when the Maritimes-wide code 902 was divided so that New Brunswick and Newfoundland could each get dedicated numbering. That arrangement lasted only until 1962, when Newfoundland was carved out into its own code, 709, leaving 506 to cover New Brunswick on its own for the next six decades.

Growth in mobile and business lines eventually pushed 506 toward exhaustion. The CRTC approved a distributed overlay, area code 428, in 2018, though implementation was deferred by a later decision in 2020. The overlay finally went live on April 29, 2023, bringing mandatory ten-digit local dialing to the province and freeing up new numbering capacity alongside 506.

The region served by 506 reflects New Brunswick's distinct identity: it is Canada's only officially bilingual province, with English and French recognized in provincial law since 1969, and the Acadian communities of the north and east maintain a strong Francophone culture. Beyond Moncton, the numbering plan reaches Saint John, Fredericton, Bathurst, and Edmundston, tying together a provincial economy built on forestry, fishing, energy (including Irving Oil's large Saint John refinery), agriculture, and tourism.
