902 Area Code – Halifax, Prince Edward Island: Location, Time Zone & History

Area code 902 dates to 1947, one of the original North American area codes, and originally covered all three Maritime provinces -- Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. New Brunswick split away into its own code, 506, in 1955, leaving 902 to cover Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island together for nearly seven decades. Relief eventually came through an all-services overlay: CRTC Telecom Decision 2012-528 assigned the new code 782, which entered service in 2014, with central office codes released in May and mandatory ten-digit dialing beginning that November. Looking further ahead, the CRTC reserved a third code, 851, in 2022 for whenever the 902/782 complex again approaches exhaustion.

Halifax, the region's largest city, is joined in the numbering plan area by Sydney, Charlottetown, Summerside, Truro, New Glasgow, Kentville and Dartmouth, all on Atlantic Time.

The Maritime economy leans on fishing and seafood processing, particularly lobster and scallops, the deep-water Port of Halifax, shipbuilding at Irving Shipbuilding's Halifax Shipyard, and Prince Edward Island's potato farming, alongside tourism drawn to the Cabot Trail and Peggy's Cove.
