709 Area Code – St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador: Location, Time Zone & History

Newfoundland Time runs half an hour off every other clock in the Americas, and it belongs entirely to area code 709, which covers the whole province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The numbering history reflects the province's own path into Canada: after joining Confederation in 1949, Newfoundland was folded into the Maritime-wide 902, moved to the newly created 506 in 1955 alongside New Brunswick, and finally split off in 1962 as its own dedicated numbering plan area once Labrador was combined with the island.

Population growth eventually pushed 709 toward exhaustion, and NANPA assigned area code 879 as an overlay in 2017; mandatory ten-digit local dialing began province-wide on April 1, 2023, and 879 entered service February 17, 2024. The 709/879 area covers roughly 510,550 people, per the 2021 Census of Population for the entire province.

The economy still carries echoes of the historic cod fishery, now centered on shellfish, alongside offshore oil and gas from the Hibernia, Hebron, and White Rose platforms on the Grand Banks, iron ore mining around Labrador City, and hydroelectric power from Churchill Falls and Muskrat Falls. St. John's George Street and its distinct Newfoundland English dialect give the province a cultural identity all its own, while Labrador's Inuit, Innu, and Metis communities add a distinct Indigenous heritage to the mainland portion.
