History & Cultural Notes

When the North American Numbering Plan was first drawn up in 1947, Quebec received only two area codes: 514 for the western part of the province and 418 for the east, anchored on Quebec City. A decade later, a 1957 flash-cut split of the 514 territory carved out the new code 819 for the central region around Gatineau, Sherbrooke, and Trois-Rivieres, while the northern part of that territory, which had no telephone service at the time, was folded into 418 instead.

Quebec City itself, the capital of the province and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, remains the anchor of the numbering plan area, but 418 also reaches communities well beyond it, including Saguenay, Levis, Rimouski, Sept-Iles, and Baie-Comeau. As the region's population grew, so did its number needs: 581 was introduced in 2008 as the first overlay, followed by 367 in 2018, and a third overlay, 273, has been approved to take effect in 2027.

Together with 514, 418 stands as one of only two area codes originally assigned to Quebec in 1947, a distinction that still shapes how the province's telephone geography is understood today.
