History & Cultural Notes
Few area codes went as long without change as 715, the code covering northern Wisconsin since the original 1947 division of the state, which split the north under 715 from the south and northeast under 414. Sixty-three years passed without a split or overlay — one of the longest unmodified runs of any area code in the country — before growth in cellphones and pagers finally exhausted the available numbers. Rather than redraw the map, regulators authorized area code 534 as an overlay in 2010: mandatory ten-digit local dialing took effect July 17, 2010, and 534 began being assigned on August 14, 2010 across the same territory, leaving existing 715 numbers untouched.
That territory is popularly known as Wisconsin's Northwoods, a region prized for its lakes and forests, and it is served today by Eau Claire, Wausau, Superior, Rhinelander, Stevens Point, Marshfield, and Chippewa Falls. Forestry and paper products, dairy and agriculture, manufacturing, healthcare, and University of Wisconsin campuses all contribute to the local economy, alongside tourism built around the lakes region. Eau Claire itself has a distinct cultural footprint beyond commerce: it is home to Justin Vernon's Grammy-winning band Bon Iver and the Eaux Claires music festival he co-founded, a point of regional pride layered atop the area's long-standing forestry and Northwoods identity.
