584 Area Code – Winnipeg, Manitoba: Location, Time Zone & History

Manitoba's telephone numbers have been drawn from a single numbering plan area since 1947, when area code 204 was first assigned to the entire province — a rare case of a Canadian province never having its numbering area geographically split. As demand grew, 431 was layered on as an overlay in 2012, and area code 584 followed as a third overlay, entering service on October 29, 2022 under Telecom Decision CRTC 2022-51. Because ten-digit local dialing had already become mandatory with the 431 overlay, the arrival of 584 required no further dialing transition for residents.

The 204/431/584 numbering plan area covers all of Manitoba, from Winnipeg to Brandon, Portage la Prairie, Steinbach, Thompson, and Selkirk, tying together the province's southern agricultural belt and its northern communities under one shared numbering system.
