587 Area Code – Calgary, Alberta: Location, Time Zone & History

Alberta's economy stretches across oil and gas, agriculture, technology, tourism, and construction, and the 587 code was designed specifically to keep pace with that growth. Rather than serving one city or region, 587 is a province-wide distributed overlay, sharing numbering territory with 403 and, later, 825 and 368 across all of Alberta, including Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, and Lethbridge.

The province's numbering history began in 1947 with area code 403 covering all of Alberta plus the Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and a sliver of what is now Nunavut. A 1999 split created 780 for the northern two-thirds of the province, including Edmonton, while 403 remained in the south with Calgary. As forecasts pointed to central office code exhaustion in both major cities, Telecom Decision CRTC 2007-42 approved 587 as an overlay, entering service September 19, 2008, alongside a shift to mandatory ten-digit local dialing that September.

That overlay model proved durable: Alberta added 825 in 2016 and 368 in 2022 on the same territory, all coexisting with 587 rather than replacing it, a structure built to absorb continued demand from the province's energy-driven economy without further disrupting existing phone numbers.
