History & Cultural Notes

Nashville's economy has long outgrown its reputation as simply "Music City." The Grand Ole Opry and the country music recording industry remain central to the region's identity, but the metro area is also a major U.S. healthcare hub, anchored by HCA Healthcare, founded there in 1968, along with numerous other hospital-management and health-system companies headquartered locally. Higher education, tourism and hospitality, and automotive and advanced manufacturing round out a diversified economic base spanning Nashville, Murfreesboro, Franklin, Brentwood, Gallatin, and Hendersonville.

To keep pace with this growth without disrupting existing subscribers, regulators approved area code 629 in October 2013 as an overlay for the 615 numbering plan area — Tennessee's first overlay, deliberately chosen to avoid the kind of geographic split that had earlier divided the state with area codes 423 and 931. Permissive dialing began in mid-2014, letting callers use either seven or ten digits, before ten-digit dialing became mandatory in early 2015.

The overlay model meant 615 numbers stayed intact across Nashville's hospital campuses, university offices, and recording studios, while 629 absorbed new growth in the same territory.
