History & Cultural Notes

Detroit's newest area code has an unusually long backstory. NANPA first reserved 679 as a future overlay for 313 back in February 2000, but the relief schedule was canceled that April and the plan sat dormant for more than two decades. It finally moved forward when the Michigan Public Service Commission announced the 679 overlay on March 17, 2025: permissive ten-digit dialing ran from April to October 2025, mandatory ten-digit dialing began October 7, 2025, and 679 numbers themselves entered service on November 7, 2025.

As an overlay rather than a geographic split, 679 covers exactly the same Detroit and Wayne County territory as 313, extending to Dearborn, Hamtramck, Highland Park, Grosse Pointe, and Lincoln Park. The change required every caller in the combined 313/679 complex to adopt mandatory ten-digit local dialing, and it pushed the projected exhaustion date for the numbering complex out to the first quarter of 2028.
