725 Area Code – Las Vegas, Nevada: Location, Time Zone & History

Area code 702 covered the entirety of Nevada from 1947 until December 12, 1998, when the state split and area code 775 took over everywhere outside Clark County, leaving 702 to serve Las Vegas and its surroundings alone. Continued growth in the region eventually called for more numbers without another split, so area code 725 entered service May 3, 2014 as an all-services overlay on 702 across the whole of Clark County, requiring ten-digit dialing for every local call.

Because 702 and 725 cover the exact same Clark County footprint, the only real difference between them is the vintage of the number issued -- residents and businesses in Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Boulder City, Mesquite, and Laughlin may carry either code. Clark County's population stood at about 2.27 million as of the 2020 Census.

The region's identity is inseparable from the Las Vegas Strip's casino resorts, live entertainment residencies, and the Las Vegas Convention Center's trade-show business, alongside Nellis Air Force Base and the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead landmarks near Boulder City. During the 1998 split, planners are said to have steered clear of assigning 777 -- a number evocative of slot-machine jackpots -- to Las Vegas, giving it to the rest of the state as 775 instead.
