728 Area Code – West Palm Beach, Florida: Location, Time Zone & History

Area code 728 is one of the newest codes in the country, activated March 10, 2023 as an all-services overlay on 561, the code covering all of Palm Beach County and its hub city, West Palm Beach. The Florida Public Service Commission ordered the overlay to relieve numbering exhaustion without forcing a further geographic split, following an order numbered PSC-2021-0455-PAA-TP; ten-digit dialing had already become mandatory across the area back in October 2021.

561 itself had already been trimmed once before, in 2002, when the Treasure Coast counties of Martin, St. Lucie, and Indian River broke away as area code 772, leaving 561 -- and eventually 728 -- to cover Palm Beach County alone. Because 728 is a pure overlay rather than a split, residents across cities like Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, Delray Beach, and Jupiter may hold either code with no geographic distinction between them.

The county's economy spans real estate development, aerospace manufacturers such as Pratt & Whitney and Sikorsky, and corporate headquarters including NextEra Energy and Office Depot, alongside agriculture so significant it earns Palm Beach County the nickname "Winter Vegetable Capital" of the United States. The town of Palm Beach itself remains a storied enclave of wealth and winter estates, including Mar-a-Lago.
