782 Area Code – Halifax, Prince Edward Island: Location, Time Zone & History

Area code 782 is not a territory of its own but an overlay on 902, the code assigned to the entire Maritimes back in 1947. New Brunswick split away as 506 in 1955, leaving 902 to cover only Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, and it was on that shrunken but still growing footprint that 782 was layered in 2014, following a CRTC decision ordering relief without forcing any existing subscriber to change numbers.

Central office codes under 782 were released May 30, 2014, and ten-digit local dialing became mandatory that November 30. The overlay was notable for spanning two entire provinces rather than a single metro area, from Halifax and Dartmouth to Charlottetown and Summerside; a third code, 851, has already been reserved by the CRTC for whenever the territory needs relief again.

The 902/782 footprint carries a distinct cultural weight: Cape Breton Island preserves a Scottish Gaelic and Celtic musical tradition celebrated each year at the Celtic Colours International Festival, while Prince Edward Island is forever tied to Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables.
