History & Cultural Notes

Few area codes had as stop-and-start a path into service as 835. The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission set it aside in 2000 as a planned third overlay for the 610/484 numbering plan area covering the Lehigh Valley, Reading, and Philadelphia's western and northern suburbs -- itself the product of the 610 split from 215 in 1994 and the 484 overlay added in 1999. Number-pooling conservation stretched the existing supply far enough that the PUC formally withdrew the 835 plan in 2005, though the code stayed reserved rather than being released.

Renewed exhaustion of the 610/484 pool brought 835 back: the PUC approved its activation on December 2, 2021, and it finally went into service September 2, 2022, completing a three-way 610/484/835 overlay across the region. As the newest and least-assigned of the three codes, 835 has no established local identity of its own, functioning mainly for new lines and ported numbers rather than as a badge like 215 is for Philadelphia.

The Lehigh Valley economy it serves runs on healthcare and hospital networks, pharmaceutical and medical-device manufacturing, and logistics and warehousing -- Eli Lilly's Upper Macungie Township campus and a dense cluster of e-commerce distribution centers have made the region a national hub for both life sciences and intermodal freight.
