839 Area Code – Columbia, South Carolina: Location, Time Zone & History

South Carolina's original 1947 area code, 803, once covered the entire state before losing territory to the 1995 split that created 864 and the 1998 split that created 843. By the late 2010s the remaining 803 territory was again running short, and the South Carolina Public Service Commission approved 839 in July 2018 as an all-services overlay to relieve it, with central-office codes projected to run out by the end of 2020.

Mandatory ten-digit local dialing took effect across the 803/839 numbering plan area on April 25, 2020, and 839 itself entered service May 26, 2020, becoming the 414th area code activated in the North American Numbering Plan. It covers the same Midlands footprint as 803, anchored by Columbia, rather than any distinct geography of its own.

Columbia has been South Carolina's capital and seat of government since 1786, home to the University of South Carolina and the State House, and Fort Jackson there stands as the U.S. Army's largest and most active Basic Combat Training center, training roughly half of the Army's incoming soldiers each year.
