Area code 975 had one of the longest and most unusual paths to activation of any code in the numbering plan. Conceived as an all-services overlay for the Kansas City metro and St. Joseph, Missouri -- the territory otherwise served by area code 816 -- it was originally slated to enter service October 20, 2001, postponed to May 5, 2002, and then suspended indefinitely. It finally went live on October 13, 2023, after NANPA Planning Letter PL-568 rescheduled it in response to a projected exhaustion of central-office codes.
816 itself had already been through two reductions before 975 arrived: 417 split off in 1950 to cover southwestern Missouri, and 660 split off in 1997 to serve the rural eastern and northwestern portions of the old territory, leaving 816 focused on Kansas City and St. Joseph. 975 now overlays that same reduced footprint, and ten-digit local dialing became mandatory with its arrival.
The 816/975 region carries a distinctive economic and cultural identity: the Kansas City Animal Health Corridor, Cerner/Oracle Health, H&R Block, and Hallmark Cards are all headquartered here, alongside one of the country's largest rail freight hubs. Kansas City is equally known for its barbecue tradition and as the birthplace of Kansas City jazz, centered on the 18th & Vine Historic District, while St. Joseph was the eastern starting point of the Pony Express in 1860.
