234 Area Code – Akron, Ohio: Location, Time Zone & History

Few area codes have as circuitous a numbering history as this one. It was first drafted in 1995 as part of a three-way relief plan for Jacksonville, Florida's 904 code, but public and regulatory pushback scrapped that arrangement; the Florida Panhandle received 850 instead, and Jacksonville simply kept 904. The unused code was later redirected north, making it one of the rare instances of an area code being reassigned across state lines before it ever carried a call.

In Ohio, the numbering plan area it would join had its own recent history: 330 had been carved out of 216 in 1996 to serve Akron, Canton, and Youngstown as that region's population outgrew a single code. Rather than splitting 330 again, regulators layered 234 on top of it as an all-services overlay, with mandatory 10-digit local dialing introduced October 1, 2000, ahead of the overlay's entry into service on October 30, 2000. Callers in Akron, Canton, Youngstown, and Warren could keep their existing 330 numbers while new lines drew from the added code.

The combined 330/234 numbering area spans 108 cities across 12 counties in northeast Ohio and remains tied to the region's industrial legacy, particularly Akron's long-standing identity as the "Rubber Capital of the World," home to Goodyear, Firestone, and B.F.
