249 Area Code – Sudbury, Ontario: Location, Time Zone & History

Northeastern and central Ontario's telephone numbering has changed shape twice since the mid-20th century. Area code 705 was created in 1956 out of portions of the 613 and 519 numbering plan areas, then saw its own territory reduced in 1962 when area code 807 was split off to serve the northwest. By the late 2000s, growing demand for numbers across the same 705 territory led the CRTC, under Telecom Decision 2009-622, to approve a distributed overlay rather than another geographic split. Area code 249 went into service on March 19, 2011, layered across the entire 705 region, and the transition brought mandatory ten-digit local dialing to the area for the first time.

The region's economy has long rested on resource extraction and processing, alongside manufacturing, tourism, and public services. Communities served under this numbering plan extend well beyond Greater Sudbury to include Barrie, North Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Peterborough, and Timmins, reflecting the breadth of the northeastern and central Ontario territory.
