History & Cultural Notes

Long before it carried live traffic, 283 spent years as a placeholder in southwest Ohio's numbering plans. The story begins in 1996, when the original 513 territory — one of the region's 1947-era area codes — was divided, sending Dayton and the northern and eastern counties to the new area code 937 while Cincinnati kept 513. Planners reserved this future overlay as early as 2000 and briefly switched on permissive dialing in January 2001, only to suspend the rollout when demand slowed and unused numbers flowed back into the pool. The idea did not stay shelved forever: the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio approved a revived all-service overlay in December 2021, and carriers began assigning 283 numbers on April 28, 2023, once the remaining 513 blocks ran dry.

The overlay now spans Cincinnati, Hamilton, Middletown, Mason, Fairfield, and Oxford, a footprint built on consumer packaged goods manufacturing centered at Procter & Gamble, grocery retail headquartered at Kroger, banking through Fifth Third Bank, healthcare anchored by Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and TriHealth, and aerospace manufacturing at GE Aviation. Cincinnati itself is known for chili served over spaghetti with shredded cheddar, and the region has long been home to the Cincinnati Reds, the oldest franchise in Major League Baseball.
