History & Cultural Notes

"The 905" and "the 416" are shorthand Canadians use to separate Toronto proper from its surrounding suburbs, and 289 belongs squarely to the suburban side of that divide. It arrived as an overlay on area code 905 — approved August 15, 2000 and placed into service June 9, 2001 — sharing the exact same Golden Horseshoe territory rather than covering separate geography. That territory itself had been carved out of area code 416 back in October 1993. Growth pressures kept building: area code 365 followed in 2013, and 742 arrived in October 2021 after regulators projected the shared overlay supply would run out by the end of 2022.

Hamilton, Mississauga, Brampton, Burlington, Oakville, and St. Catharines all share the 289 overlay, a stretch of the Greater Toronto Area built on advanced manufacturing and steel, logistics and distribution, financial-services back-office operations, higher education and research, and Niagara's wine and agriculture industry. Beyond economics, the 905 belt carries real political weight, frequently cited as a bellwether region in Canadian federal and provincial elections.
