History & Cultural Notes

Quebec City anchors the numbering region served by area code 367, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the capital of the province of Quebec. As the historic and administrative heart of eastern Quebec, the city gives the region its identity even as the numbering plan stretches well beyond the capital to Saguenay, Levis, Rimouski, Sept-Iles, and Baie-Comeau.

The 367 code itself is a relatively recent addition. It was assigned by the CRTC in 2017 and entered service on November 24, 2018, as the second overlay layered atop the original area code 418. The first overlay, 581, had already been introduced a decade earlier, taking effect on September 6, 2008, alongside mandatory ten-digit dialing across eastern Quebec. By the time 367 arrived, the 418/581 complex was again running short of numbers, prompting the CRTC to authorize a further code. A third overlay, 273, has since been approved for the same complex, expected to take effect in 2027.

Economically, the region draws on a mix of government administration, tourism, forestry and pulp and paper production, mining, and the fishing and maritime industry — a reflection of Quebec City's role as capital alongside the resource-driven economies of the Saguenay and North Shore communities further afield.
