History & Cultural Notes
The Illinois Commerce Commission approved a future overlay for the 217 numbering plan area in Docket No. 01-0656 back on March 6, 2007, but number conservation measures pushed the actual rollout of 447 back more than a decade. A permissive 10-digit dialing period ran from August 29, 2020 to February 27, 2021, after which 10-digit local dialing became mandatory across 217/447; the overlay itself went into service on March 27, 2021.
The territory is anchored by Springfield, home to Abraham Lincoln from 1837 to 1861 and site of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, which opened in 2005. It also reaches Champaign-Urbana, home to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, along with Decatur, Danville, and Quincy, all on Central Time.
Central Illinois's economy is built around:
- State government and public administration
- Health care
- Higher education and research
- Insurance
- Agriculture
As an all-services overlay rather than a geographic split, the new code introduced no new boundaries within central Illinois; existing 217 numbers stayed in place, and new lines throughout Springfield, Champaign-Urbana, Decatur, Danville, and Quincy have since been assigned from the overlay.
