History & Cultural Notes
Long before 458 existed, its territory belonged to area code 503, Oregon's original code, until 541 split away on November 5, 1995 to cover most of the state outside the Portland metro area. Growth in cell phones and pagers eventually pushed 541 toward exhaustion of its central office codes, and on February 10, 2010 the Oregon Public Utility Commission's remedy took effect: area code 458, an all-services overlay layered directly on top of 541. Mandatory ten-digit local dialing followed that same January. The first central office code under 458, numbered 205, wasn't issued until August 2011, in Eugene.
Eugene is the anchor city, known as "Track Town, USA" for its long-running track-and-field heritage and home to the University of Oregon, but the 541/458 territory stretches far beyond it to Bend, Medford, Corvallis, Albany, and Grants Pass. Geographically the overlay is striking in its reach: it runs from the Oregon coast to the High Desert, tracing the full length of both the Oregon-California and Oregon-Idaho borders while staying entirely within Oregon.
The regional economy draws on higher education, forestry and wood products, agriculture and viticulture, outdoor recreation and tourism, and healthcare.
