Few metro areas illustrate the pressure of rapid growth on a telephone numbering plan quite like Atlanta, where four overlapping area codes now share a single calling territory. Area code 678 was introduced in 1998 as the first overlay atop the combined 404 and 770 region. By March 2001, NANPA had already designated a further overlay, area code 470, effective that September, because 678 itself was approaching exhaustion. It took nearly a decade for demand to catch up: 470 was not actually opened for customer number assignment until February 26, 2010.
