474 Area Code – Regina, Saskatchewan: Location, Time Zone & History

Saskatchewan's telephone numbering territory began as a single zone in 1947, when area code 306 was assigned to cover the entire province under the original North American numbering plan. As Saskatchewan grew, that single code needed relief: area code 639 was introduced in 2013 as an overlay across the same 306 territory, with mandatory 10-digit local dialing taking effect that May.

By the time regulators projected that 306 and 639 together would exhaust available central office codes around September 2022, a third code was already waiting in reserve. It had been set aside in October 2010 and was formally approved as a province-wide distributed overlay by Telecom Decision CRTC 2019-129, entering service on October 2, 2021 as area code 474. Because 10-digit dialing was already standard from the 639 rollout, its launch required no further change in how residents placed local calls.

The combined 306/639/474 numbering plan area spans all of Saskatchewan, serving Regina and Saskatoon along with Prince Albert and Moose Jaw. The provincial economy centers on potash and mineral mining, agriculture and agri-food processing, oil and gas extraction, and government services. Saskatchewan keeps its clocks on Central Standard Time year-round, never observing daylight saving time — a distinctive regional habit shared across all three overlay codes.
