History & Cultural Notes

Metro Atlanta became a testing ground for a new way of handling area code exhaustion when the first 678 numbers were assigned to customers on January 15, 1998. Rather than splitting the existing 404 and 770 territories geographically, regulators overlaid 678 across the entire combined region, making it the inaugural overlay for this numbering plan area and forcing ten-digit dialing to become mandatory throughout metro Atlanta.

The overlay approach proved durable: 470 was added in September 2001 after 678 itself approached exhaustion, and 943 followed in March 2022 after approval from the Georgia Public Service Commission in 2020. Today four codes, 404, 678, 470, and 770, plus 943, share one of the largest local calling areas in the United States, reaching beyond Atlanta itself into Marietta, Sandy Springs, Roswell, Alpharetta, and Decatur.
