753 Area Code – Ottawa, Ontario: Location, Time Zone & History

Parliament Hill and the seat of Canada's federal government sit within the numbering plan area now served by three overlapping area codes: 613, 343, and, since March 26, 2022, 753. Approved under CRTC Telecom Decision 2021-372 to relieve projected exhaustion of the 343/613 complex, 753 became the 431st area code in service across the North American Numbering Plan without requiring any existing Ottawa or Eastern Ontario customer to change numbers.

A fourth code, 871, has already been set aside by CRTC Telecom Decision 2025-113 for future relief once the 343/613/753 complex approaches exhaustion again, projected around March 2029. The shared territory, covering Ottawa, Kingston, Belleville, Brockville, Cornwall, Pembroke, and Trenton, is home to about 1,017,449 people per the 2021 Census of Population for the City of Ottawa.

Ottawa's economy centers on federal government administration alongside a growing technology sector in the Kanata North park, nicknamed "Silicon Valley North," plus defence and telecommunications research and agri-food industries. The region's cultural landmarks include the UNESCO-listed Rideau Canal, which becomes the world's largest naturally frozen skating rink each winter for the Winterlude festival, while Kingston briefly served as the capital of the United Province of Canada from 1841 to 1844.
