779 Area Code – Rockford, Illinois: Location, Time Zone & History

Rather than splitting off territory, 779 was assigned by NANPA on February 6, 2004 as a future all-services overlay for 815 -- one of the original 86 area codes from 1947, later trimmed in 1956 when 309 split off its western portion.

Mandatory ten-digit dialing began across 815 on February 17, 2007, and 779 followed one month later, on March 17, 2007, becoming the region's first overlay and northern Illinois's first area code added without a geographic split.
