History & Cultural Notes

Southern Indiana's original area code, 812, dates all the way back to 1947, but by the early 2010s its supply of central office codes was running out. The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission approved a fix on July 31, 2013: an all-services overlay, 930, layered across the same 40-county territory rather than splitting it in two. After a permissive dialing period that began in March 2014 and mandatory 10-digit local dialing that took effect February 7, 2015, the first 930 numbers reached carriers on March 7, 2015.

The overlay meant Indiana's southern region -- anchored by Evansville, with Bloomington, Terre Haute, Columbus, Jasper and Vincennes also served -- kept its familiar 812 numbers while new lines picked up 930. It was the first time the area needed mandatory ten-digit dialing at all.

  • Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana in Princeton is one of the automaker's largest North American assembly plants.
  • Cook Medical, headquartered in Bloomington, anchors the region's medical device industry.
  • Cummins, the diesel engine maker, is headquartered in Columbus.
  • A small pocket of Henderson County, Kentucky, north of the Ohio River, is served by 812/930 rather than a Kentucky code.
